Hearing Loss A Possibility From Diabetes

Results from a 5 year hearing study involving more than people has shown that people with were found to have hearing loss in significantly greater numbers than people have never had diabetes. The hearing loss starts at an early age and will progress as the diabetics grow older.

The findings of this study show that hearing loss related to age has been found in half of all patients surveyed in this study. The loss of hearing related to the duration of the individuals diabetes and the progression was found to be significantly greater than in people with recently diagnosed diabetes over the five year study.

They suggest that usual care for people with diabetes include questions about hearing function and referral for hearing assessment.
